We need to elect officials who are not afraid to rein in the police when needed. There's been a huge increase in military type swat teams on police forces around the country and I don't believe it's at all necessary.

The QR5, from U.K.-based Quietrevolution, is a residential-scale wind turbine that generates enough electricity to power a standard U.S. home or a small office. It also looks like a piece of wind-powered sculpture

Girl Scout Cookies Still Have Hydrogenated Oils
I have refused to buy Girl Scout cookies for several years. Refusing those cute little munchkins is hard, but I always give them a donation and explain why I won't eat their cookies. I even wrote the Girl Scouts and asked them why they don't make their cookies with butter. The fact that they claim they are transfat free but actually have transfats, really lowers my opinion of the organization.

The Crushing Fear That Stalks America
Robert Fisk is the finest Middle East journalist I know and he writes an excellent article on the state of fear mongering in the US. Ask yourself how many ships & jets Al qaeda has then ask why are we so afraid?

Boys Gone Wild
There are many things that bother me about this, but one I must comment on is the attitude of these soldiers. They act like they're playing a game and their immature machismo is frightening and needs to be disciplined. That and they need to be charged with war crimes or murder.
Rape Fears Lead Women Soldiers to Suicide or Death
U.S. female soldiers in Iraq were assaulted or raped by male soldiers in the women’s latrines, and an alarming number committed suicide or died of dehydration, Col. Janis Karpinski testified before an international human rights commission of inquiry last month.

Amazing New Printer Technology Set To Shake Up Printing Industry
And I say, "Good!" The ink-jet industry has been ripping us off for years and I don't recommend inkjets to anyone, especially since color lasers have come way down in price. But this company may change my mind.

Next Time Bush Says "Guest Worker" Think "Indentured Servitude"
A new report titled "Close to Slavery" exposes the human rights abuses by those who lure unsuspecting poor people to US & house them in squalid conditions, pay them sub-substandard wages, with insufficient hours and, of course, no benefits. To top it all off, the workers have to pay for their "housing" and can only work for that one employer.

Do You Owe the AMT? IRS Website to Help You Find Out
If I were asked to design the AMT it would be something simple like:
1. Is your AGI over 150,000? (indexed for inflation)
2. If yes, multiply AGI times 20% (or whatever % is reasonable)
3. If your regular tax is less than AMT, use AMT.
The AMT we have now is a completely separate tax code with it's own depreciation rates, foreign tax credits, itemized deductions, etc. etc., ad nauseum. It's a hateful code that most tax professionals hate.

Miers Involved in Prosecutor Firings-Has Long History of Protecting Bush
She has some "dirt" on him but she's well known to be VERY loyal. Greg Palast exposes Miers' firing of a Texas lottery official so Bush could give a no bid contract to his buddy who helped keep him out of Viet Nam. Presidents should not be allowed to appoint so many of their cronies in the government. That's the real problem with our system.

Why do some people in the government treat us like the enemy? These Illinois "revenuers" ought to be disciplined for threatening 79 year old low-income pensioners who are trying to do their part to improve the environment by using recycled cooking oil to run their car. Threatening them with felony charges and thousands of dollars in back taxes is not the way to approach the issue! Get a clue, you morons!

Promising Democracy, Imposing Theocracy - Violence against Women in Iraq
Women, in particular, are much worse off under US occupation than they were under Saddam's rule. The theocrats wasted little time in beginning their assault and repression of women. Why are fundamentalist men so afraid of women that they have to suppress them? It happens here in the US too.

Louisiana Injustice: 32 Years In Jail - No Proof of Guilt!
I heard about this on Democracy Now! this morning. Only thing he's guilty of is being black in Louisiana at a bad time in our history. It's an embarrassment to Louisiana and the US that he's still in prison. He would have been executed if Supreme Court hadn't ruled that Louisiana's capital punishment was unconstitutional.
